Vision Australia Radio will transition its services in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth from AM frequencies to DAB+ (digital radio) from 1 July 2026.
From this date, broadcasts in these cities will no longer be available on AM. However, services will continue on DAB+, remaining free-to-air and accessible to listeners.
This marks a significant change for the network, which has supported people who are blind or have low vision to access information for more than 40 years. Vision Australia says the move is essential to modernise the service and ensure its long-term sustainability.
“Each month, more than 500,000 people listen to Vision Australia Radio. It’s a vital way for us to help people who are blind or have low vision stay informed and connected with their communities,” said Vision Australia CEO David Williamson.
"We know how passionate our listeners are, and we’re committed to continuing their favourite programming. Moving from AM to DAB+ in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth will significantly reduce operating costs, while maintaining our focus on locally produced, relevant content for the blind and low vision community."
Although AM broadcasts will cease in these locations, listeners will still have multiple ways to access the service.
“Many listeners already use DAB+ and benefit from its clearer sound, but there are other options available,” said Mr Williamson.
“All Vision Australia Radio content can be streamed via our website or through the Community Radio Plus app. Smart speakers, including Amazon Echo devices, can also play Vision Australia Radio, and our podcasts remain available.”
Vision Australia is committed to supporting listeners through the transition.
“We want all our listeners to continue tuning in. We’ll be sharing regular reminders across our broadcasts and other channels, along with information on how to keep listening,” said Mr Williamson.
“We can also assist anyone who is blind or has low vision to set up the best listening solution or device for them.”
